Amalie
Privacy Policy
Last updated 23 October 2026
Amalie is my site for live one-to-one lessons. This policy explains what I collect, why I collect it, and how you can ask me to delete it. If something here is unclear, write to amaliejn2004@gmail.com.
Account
Signing in is handled by Clerk. Clerk receives the name, email address, and profile photo on your account, and keeps the session that recognizes you when you come back. I use those details to know who is in the classroom, in chat, and on a booked lesson.
Lessons and the classroom
If you write to ask for a first lesson, our teachers receive your name, email, and optional note. A booked lesson stores the student name, email, and the lesson time.
The classroom stores the materials we use together: vocabulary, pronunciation audio I record for a word, practice progress, review history, tasks, and notes I keep about your studies. Messages we exchange in chat are stored so the conversation is still there later. Your timezone is stored so lesson times show in local time.
Live lessons run in a call through Jitsi as a Service, provided by 8x8. The call is given your display name, email, and profile image so we can see who joined. Recording, livestreaming, and transcription are switched off in the app.
The Explore walk can open a shared Google Street View. I store the camera position for that classroom. It is not the location of your device.
Google Calendar
Connecting Google Calendar is optional. When you connect it, Amalie asks Google for these permissions: openid, email, and https://www.googleapis.com/auth/calendar.events (view and edit events on calendars you can access) and https://www.googleapis.com/auth/calendar.calendarlist.readonly (see which calendars are on the account). Google also shares the email address on that Google account.
I use that access to run the lesson calendar, and only for that:
- On my teacher calendar, Amalie reads the start time, end time, and title of events on the calendars checked in Google Calendar, including calendars added by other apps, so a lesson is not offered on top of something already there. Titles are shown only to me. Guest lists, descriptions, and locations of those events are not stored. Holiday and birthday calendars are skipped.
- Amalie creates, updates, and removes the lesson event on my primary calendar. If you are a student and you have connected Google, your Google email is added as a guest on your own lesson, so it appears on your calendar and Google can send the invitation. Your other events are not copied into Amalie.
- Amalie stores the Google email and an encrypted refresh token for the connected account, so the connection can keep working until you disconnect it. The token is not shown in the app.
Google user data is not sold, not used for advertising, and not used to decide creditworthiness or for lending. Students are not shown the titles of my other events. They only see which lesson times are open.
Amalie's use and transfer to any other app of information received from Google APIs will adhere to the Google API Services User Data Policy, including the Limited Use requirements.
You can disconnect Google Calendar from the calendar section of the teacher page or the classroom. Disconnecting deletes that connection, including the Google email stored on it and the refresh token, and Amalie stops reading the calendar. You can also revoke Amalie from your Google Account permissions. Lesson times already booked stay, because they are the record of the lesson. Event times and titles already copied onto my teacher calendar stay until you ask me to delete them.
Who else processes this
I use a few services to run the site. They receive only what they need for that job:
- Clerk, for accounts and sign-in.
- Convex, for chat, presence, lesson bookings, and calendar connections.
- Neon, for vocabulary, practice progress, tasks, and study notes.
- Resend, to email me when someone asks for a first lesson, and to email both of us if a lesson is booked, moved, or cancelled. Those emails include the lesson time and the classroom link, not the contents of unrelated calendar events.
- Google, for Calendar when you connect it, and for Maps and Street View when you open Explore.
- 8x8, for the live lesson call.
- PostHog, for optional page-view analytics when you allow it.
Some of these providers store data outside Denmark, including in the United States. I do not sell personal information. I may disclose it if the law requires it, or to protect the people using the site.
Cookies
Clerk uses cookies to keep you signed in. Amalie does not use advertising cookies.
Optional analytics
If you allow it, PostHog counts visits to known pages using a random identifier kept in memory until you reload the page or withdraw permission. Events include the teaching site’s identifier, selected by a verified server lookup, so administrators can see page-view totals and daily trends for each site. This identifies the site, not your account. Page addresses are reduced to templates, so student, class, and module IDs, query strings, and story slugs are excluded. Administration, account and enrollment routes are excluded. We do not send PostHog names, email addresses, account details, lesson content, page titles, or referring pages. Session recording, automatic click tracking, and person profiles are disabled. Previously untagged events cannot be assigned to a site; analytics history remains subject to the PostHog project’s retention even if a teaching site is deleted.
PostHog does not load or receive events until you choose Allow analytics. Reject analytics keeps it off. Open Analytics settings at the bottom of any page to change your choice or withdraw permission. Your browser's Do Not Track or Global Privacy Control signal also keeps it off. Analytics settings appear only when PostHog is configured for this site.
Your choice is remembered in this browser's local storage for 180 days; PostHog may also store its consent marker there. Analytics identifiers are not saved in cookies or local storage. Withdrawing permission stops new page-view collection and clears the identifier in memory. It does not remove events already received by PostHog.
How long I keep it
Account and classroom records stay while you have an account and we are working together, and afterward only as long as I need them to teach or to keep a record of a lesson. A Google connection stays until you disconnect it or ask me to delete it. You can email amaliejn2004@gmail.com and ask me to delete your information. I will delete what I hold, except where I have to keep a record by law.
Children
Amalie is not directed at children under 16. If you believe a child has sent personal information, email me and I will delete it.
Your rights
If you are in the European Economic Area or the United Kingdom, you can ask for a copy of your information, a correction, deletion, a restriction, or to object to a use of it. You can also complain to the Danish Data Protection Agency, Datatilsynet. None of that requires you to close your account first. Start by writing to amaliejn2004@gmail.com.
Changes
If I change this policy, I will update the date at the top of the page. The current version is always linked from the homepage. The Terms of Service cover use of the site itself.
